Our founder Jeroen knows how it feels to be insecure about skin imperfections as he struggled with acne, and everything in between himself when he was growing up. He tried more acne products, doctor prescriptions, and infomercial products than you can possibly imagine, and could not find an easy-to-use solution with fast-acting results that were safe at the same time as well.

His frustration became the catalyst for developing a technology that treated the root cause of our pesky breakouts, not just the symptoms.

The breakthrough “A-HA” moment came while Jeroen was reading about antimicrobial peptide research, which is considered by many to have begun in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Zasloff at the National Institute of Health. 

While working with a group of amphibians in the mid 1980’s, Dr. Zasloff noted that these animals seemed to be less susceptible to infection than he expected. He determined that excretions from the skins of these animals possessed antimicrobial properties, and from these excretions he isolated linear peptides that he termed magainins (magen or magain is the Hebrew word for shield).

Antimicrobial peptides have been produced for eons ranging from humans to animals to insects to plants. Their presence in such a wide array of organisms indicates that they continue to play key and essential roles in controlling bacterial growth and constitute the most common means of controlling bacterial growth found in nature.

One specific species, Bombina Orientalis (the South Korean Fire-Bellied Toad) became the inspiration of Jeroen’s tireless efforts in engineering a targeted solution for the reduction of the acne bacteria; C. acnes while leaving the good ones unharmed.

Bombi was born out of his necessity to develop acne products that actually work and Jeroen’s deep desire to build an inclusive acne/skin positive brand by providing people a place to feel safe, empowered. Today and everyday our mission is quite simple: to give you skin so good, you can’t help but smile.
